Multi-Family
History Revisited
This mixed use, commercial and multifamily project is located on the 100 block of Main Street in Carbondale’s downtown. Three stories will house commercial at grade, commercial and apartment space on the second level, and apartments-only on an inset third story. The block where this project is located has no alley access from behind like other downtown blocks. The building responds with brick-clad storefront forms framing a drive access along Main Street, and a distinct bridging element above. We were influenced by the transitional nature of the site. The architecture responds to the original historic buildings west of the site and also the new buildings that characterize the immediate context of the modern 100 block. This mixed-use structure aims to bridge between these architectural languages.
